I got these pilar candle holders at an estate sale back when I was doing more of the dark primitive style. Wonderfully carved solid wood, but pretty dated looking. I spray painted them with flat black, then sanded them for some of the wood to show through. Then intended to place a couple of grubby pilar candles in them.

Alas, I decided to convert the store to the lighter cottage colors just after I painted these black. They sat in my ‘to do’ pile for a while before I decided to paint them an off-white

Then I just sanded them a little again to let some of the original brown show through. They worked great in my white harvest display.

Updating some items from the primitive look to cottage style can be a simple as a coat of paint!
