It’s “that time of year” again!

That time of year when I get SICK!  UG!!!  I really thought I was ‘done with this’ when I was finally able to get a pneumonia vaccine last year.  Apparently NOT!  sigh.

It started off EXACTLY the same as it did last year.  Seemingly my seasonal allergies at first, the BAM!  And I can’t even get out of bed I am so wiped out!  Constant fever/sweats/chills.  Nausea.  Head and ear congestion.  At one point I was SO HOT that I was literally DRIPPING SWEAT.  Taking Tylenol made me nauseous because, of course, I had no appetite either.  Decided I’d better take my temperature.  It was 94.  No, not 98.4.  94 degrees period.  THAT can’t be a good sign.

I really needed to go to the doctor, but didn’t have the strength to drive myself.  So Michael took me to the ER when he got home.  I did NOT want to get as sick as I ended up getting last year.   Last year the aforementioned symptoms lasted a full week, then overnight I felt like I had a pile of bricks on my chest.  Ah, yes.. . . . that familiar pneumonia feeling.  Went to out local small town ER where I had been seen before for pneumonia.  They took x-ray and sent me home with antibiotics; and told me to follow-up with my primary care doctor.

After five days on the antibiotic I was WORSE, not better.  My primary care called in a different rx.  Still not better after a couple more days, so Michael took me to our primary care and the doctor. Doctor told him to take me straight to the ER and tell them he said to admit me!  By the time I waited for 2 hours in the ER waiting room, I had turned a corner and started feeling better.  They did the usual work up, but sent me home.  Took a round of steroids and another 3 weeks for me to recover.

I had NO INTENTION of allowing myself of EVER getting that sick ever again!  Hence the seemingly earlier than necessary trip to the ER.  Just my luck to get an Intern, who said my symptoms were so general and non specific that there really wasn’t anything he could do until I got sicker.  And of ALL the symptoms I had described and EMPHASIZED my history of pneumonia, COPD and asthma; ALL he wrote on his notes was ‘fatigue’!  (didn’t see that until after the fact, but still?!?!

Fortunately all patients of interns have to be checked by an attending doctor also before they are released; and the attending I got WAS sympathetic to my plight and medical history.  And wrote a prescription for antibiotics.  24 hours after starting them and I begin to feel better already.  sigh of relief that I won’t have to be sick for a month again this year!

It’s supposed to be a SUNNY and warm weekend!  Hoping my strength is back up enough to get outside and work on painting some furniture!
