It’s ‘officially’ now a COLLECTION!

Yippee!  I have a new collection.  Armillary spheres. .  I’ve always liked them and finally splurged and bought myself one a couple of years ago when I got my $10.00 bonus from shopping at Goodwill.  It was white and a little rusty in spots  fit in nicely with my globe collection and my shabby chic style.

P1100549I was content with just the one.  But then I found another at a price I couldn’t pass up; so now I had a pair of them.  It’s not really a ‘collection’ unless you have 3 or more; so once I got that second one, I REALLY wanted a third one!

P1100553My dear friend and thrift shopping buddy got me this smallest one for Christmas!

P1100550Is it not THE PERFECT size to round out my collection???  I do not think I could have found a more perfect one if I had tried.  Now it’s officially a collection of armillary spheres!

P1100556Here’s the other special treasure I got for Christmas, to go with my Santos (faux and repros!) collection.  Isn’t she sweet?!?

P1100555And here she is in her place of honor amongst my others.

Did you start any new, or add to your  collections over the holidays?

P.S. If anyone knows the correct plural of armillary PLEASE let me know!  I tried looking it up and can’t even find the original word.  sigh.  *** Asked and answered (thanks Pam!) and edited accordingly.

LATEST FINDS & 2/3 of the way to my next collection!

Found another armillary last week while out and about treasure hunting!  Charming little gold frame and a unique old bottle.   I saw another bottle EXACTLY like this at Stars too.  Any know about the history of this unique shaped bottle

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 017Little corner shelf to repaint.

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 020Little oval step stool.  I’m always looking for little stools like this!  And they ALWAYS sell!

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 024GIANT playing cards for altered art and collage projects.

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 026Cutie patootie teeny tiny mice!  At first I thought they were salt and pepper shakers because they each had 2 extra holes in the top of their heads. Examining the bottoms of them proved that theory wrong, but they were SO cute I just had to buy them!  Will try to fill the holes and use them for cloche toppers.

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 030Wood tray.  Trays always sell well too.  AND are very useful in display for grouping a bunch of small things together.  Visually the tray makes it “one thing” so it looks less cluttered.

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 022Wood bread box to paint.  Bread boxes have proven to be good sellers for me too.

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 033Stoneware bowls.  Another ‘standard’ stock item for me.  Bowls sell much better than plates.  Go figure?!?

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 0362 liter vintage French ‘Le Parfait’ canning jar and 1/2 gallon apothecary jar.

6..18.13 projects Curiosities 031Clear glass bunny dish, stoneware creamer and bell cloche.

6..22.13 Both + projects 112And here’s my armillary 2/3 of a collection display at home. I don’t really care for the shiney finish on my newest one and will probably repaint it.  But will wait until I find my next one before I decide what color to paint it.

YIPPEE!!! I got an armillary!

I have wanted an armillary FOREVER!  Have NEVER come across one at any garage, rummage, estate sale or thrift store.  I’ve seen some pretty good hand crafted ones using embroidery hoops, and had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that is I wanted one, I was going to have to have to make my own.  ALAS!  I found one last week at Goodwill!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-HA!!!  You say!  THAT’S what an armillary is.   I’ve seen them in a lot of decorating magazines and high end catalogs.

Now normally I don’t even LOOK at an item that is over $10.00 at the thrift store.  But it just so happens that I had received my $10.00 FREEBIE certificate the week before.  (with the Goodwill club card you earn $10.00 free every time you spend $400.00 over any period of time)  I usually spend that $10 on something I might not normally buy; something for ME!  (OMYGOSH!  look at all that dust!  ack!)

AND it just happened to be SENIOR discount day, so I practically got my armillary for FREE.

For now I’ve nestled in amongst my globe collection atop the entertainment center in the living room.  Might move it to the guest room when I get back to finishing it up.  (Whenever THAT might be!)    I had tried putting some of my globes (the cream color ones) in the room, but it just didn’t ‘work’  for me.  I’ve accumulated quite a few new accessories for the room, so we’ll see what happens when I start working with those.

For now, I’m just doing a HAPPY DANCE over my great find, and practically getting it for FREE! (more…)

Armillary love!

I’ve always been fascinated with these things.  And wished I could afford to buy one many times.  Alas, they are not easy to come by at thrift stores or garage sales; so I’ve had to settle for collecting old world globes.  Just HOPING that someday I’d find an armillary to add to my collection.

And this is something that I NEVER would have thought of trying to make myself.  But Christin of “Pregnant with Power Tools” blog fame did!  Check out her tutorial in her guest post here.

And then check out this more recent post on her own blog showing how she made one using metal barrel rings!

Decisions. Decisions!  Which one do I want to try my hand at first?!?!?
