WHERE is Spring???

Ready for Spring!

I am SO ready for spring sunshine!  We had a couple of sunny ‘teaser days’ in January, and a gorgeous sunny and warm weekend last weekend . . . . the rest of the time . . .  rain . . . and MORE rain!  sigh.  Spring.  Spring.  Where art thou?

Although we haven’t had much in the way of spring weather thus far, I have been diligently working on new spring inventory; for my booth at Stars and the upcoming “Every Husband’s Nightmare Bazaar” in April.

Here’s a sneak peek at what I’ve been working on.

I’m really liking neutral tones this year.  And big jars of stuff.  Dried hydrangea, dried white pepper berries, assorted dried botanicals and assorted shells.

P1350005

Jars of spools and balls of yarns and BIG vintage spools of neutral color yarns.

And nests with eggs . . . . this set of three eggs with wood base and cloche top will be sold as a set.

Natural moss, bark and twigs (from my yard!) in a vintage apothecary jar with a little nest.

Big mercantile jar with lid and three nests; being sold as a set.

P1350033

It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but this jar also has three nests in it, each facing a different direction in the jar; moss on top of all the nests.

Small vintage bell jars with moss, nests, eggs and twigs.

Another ‘beach scape’ jar.  This jar is an old fish bowl.  This lid was from a big 2 gallon glass jar that I BROKE at my last show.  I decided to hang on to the lid, ‘just in case’ I came across another such jar when I’m out thrifting that was missing a lid.  Turned out, it fit this fish bowl perfectly.  The little sand castle was just a white plaster one that I covered with sand.

Just nests.  To give them a little ‘oomph’, I glued them to a big piece of bark.  Tied a little ‘nest’ tag onto some of them; added feathers to some.

More ‘just nests’.  These with super tiny speckled eggs.   See the comparison photo with the nest on bark for egg size.

P1350426

Assorted vintage containers with various eggs and nests.  The eggs in the tallest jar are ‘chicken egg’ size.

More of what I call the ‘mercantile’ jars; this time with bigger nests and ‘chicken’ size eggs in them; ‘nest’ tags and vintage keys tied to the lids.

Finally ran out of nests and had to start just using the assorted mosses and excelsior that I had on hand for fluff.

P1350447

Assorted vintage jars with moss and eggs.  I GLUED the eggs to the moss to prevent then from ‘disappearing’.

Using up whatever containers I happen to have on hand for the eggs and nests.  These metal candle stands were perfect ‘little nest’ size!  The darker nest is a ‘purchased pre-made’ nest; the other, a hand-made moss one.

I don’t remember where I got these cute little canning style jars, but they were perfect for a tuft of moss and three little eggs.

P1350456

LOVE these little apothecary style jars.  They are TINY.   Barely big enough for 2 of the tiny eggs.

I don’t even know what the original use for these metal tins is?!?!  I used to always use them for grubby primitive candles and ‘fixins’.  had a few leftover from my primitive days and decided to put nests in them.  These pictures show a good size comparison of the small vs. chicken size eggs.

P1350465

For those whom already have containers or cloches and just want to buy the nest, I did a few even without the added bark.  The larger white eggs in this picture are plastic eggs that came in the nests when i bought them.  The other eggs are ‘styrofoamish’ stuff that I hand painted.   All eggs are glued in place.

Close-ups of eggs.

I had a LOT of eggs to use up!  I had saved these glass baby food jars from buying baby food meat to make dog biscuits for my grand-puppy.  Spray painted the lids and printed up little ‘specimen #’ tags to glue onto the jars.  Placed one tiny egg and a pinch of moss in each one.

Will be taking some of this to Stars tomorrow.  MORE to Stars next week . . .  along with a BIG SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT.  And the rest to the spring show April 23rd.

Is it spring yet?!?!?

Been getting LOTS of spring things ready to go to Stars!

2.16.12 stars projects 001Batch of vintage apothecary jars.  You can tell the ones that are older because the inside rim of the topper is frosted glass.

2.16.12 stars projects 008This was one of the birds with the wire feet; except the feet broke off on this one.  So I put it in a nest!

2.16.12 stars projects 007

2.16.12 stars projects 009BIG vintage tin cup filled with paper shred and eggs.  (those are ‘real’ sized eggs).

2.16.12 stars projects 010I didn’t have any ‘grass’ to use so I just used my custom paper shred mix.  Since the cup is turquoise, it worked just fine.

2.16.12 stars projects 011Nest with eggs in apothecary jar.

2.16.12 stars projects 014The lid to this crock broke, so I couldn’t sell it as a crock anymore.  Just filled it with moss and added a bird and some tiny eggs. (made these eggs using Fimo clay)

2.16.12 stars projects 017Little tin watering can had a weird logo on the front, so I covered that with some tea stained paper.

2.16.12 stars projects 022Vintage cherub wall sconce nest.

2.12.13 etsy projects 034I had lots of eggs left over from last year to use up, so I didn’t need to buy any this year!  Pulled out my stash of jars that I collect year round and a bag of moss and started filling!

2.12.13 etsy projects 035A single egg on a bed of moss in a small jar.

2.12.13 etsy projects 036Covered pedestal bowl was just the right size for one of the nests.  Just added a bit of moss in the bottom.

2.12.13 etsy projects 037

2.12.13 etsy projects 038Little bell jars with moss and one egg.

2.12.13 etsy projects 039

2.12.13 etsy projects 040Bigger jars filled with nests.

2.12.13 etsy projects 041

2.12.13 etsy projects 042Short squatty jars were too small for the nests, but had room for three eggs and moss.

2.12.13 etsy projects 043

2.12.13 etsy projects 044Slightly bigger jars, but still to narrow for the nests; so again, just moss and eggs.

2.12.13 etsy projects 046

2.12.13 etsy projects 047I had more of the cream colored eggs left, so I filled this coordinated set with them.

2.5.12 signs finds etsy 032Vintage repro bird post cards that I framed.  This set went to my etsy shop and has already sold.

2.5.12 signs finds etsy 039The rest of them, in these weathered wood frames will be going to Stars.

Glass domes and nests and candles and beach things

I have a tendency to do things in ‘groupings’. I THINK in groupings, I create in groupings. I display in groupings. I almost CAN’T think of ‘just one’ of something. One of a kinds, yes, but similar one of a kinds . . . in a grouping!

So after the little egg binge of last week , I went on a bit of a ‘glass pedestals and domes’ binge. Adding in a few glass bottles I had recently acquired, just to ’round out the groupings’.

dsc00025

I’ve been putting ‘nests and eggs’ in most of the ‘cloches’ I’ve put together lately; but decided to leave a few empty for you to add your own little treasures to.

These glass bell domes I decided to not add a pedestal to, so that they would fit on this little shelf.

dsc00034

A few new aqua colored glass bottles. I can never find enough of these and they always sell really FAST!

dsc00036

Decided to go with a ‘shell’ theme on this one.

dsc00056

Which led to a few beachy themed candle holders.

dsc00038

dsc00028

dsc00047

To go with these ‘sand covered’ beachy blue flower pots.

dsc00015

Which led me to ‘beach uo’ these two plain white flower vases.

dsc00039

And then to fill this vintage style apothecary jar with shells and ocean blue/green rocks.

dsc00029

We’re back to birds nests now! I painted this thrift store candle pedestal and was planning on adding it to the other beach themed candles when I noticed this urn with a nest in it that fits perfectly on top!

dsc00023

Sweet little ‘nesting box’. Found the box at the thrift store. Cleaned it up and gave it a fresh coat of white paint. Added moss and a little egg to each cubby.

dsc00024

To keep the moss ‘mostly in place’ (because nothing will keep it entirely in place as someone will surely come along and PICK at it to see how much they can pull off!) I cut cardboard to fit in each little section, covered it with glue and then piled on the moss. Then slipped it into the cubby once the glue was dry.

I LOVE ‘rub n buff’!

I’ve seen what other bloggers have done with it, but not tried it myself until now.  I an usually able to get the multi-layered colors effect I want simply by painting and sanding.  Old gold frames (wood OR plastic) are really easy to do that way.  Just paint them black and lightly sand for the gold to show through.

But recently I decided to paint these little resin urns black, to go with the Paris apartment look I am trying to create in our antique mall space.  They just didn’t look ‘right’ when I sanded them.

I love black and white, but these just weren’t doing it for me.  Time to break out the tube of Rub n Buff!

It really takes only the TINIEST bit.  Spreads on like SILK, but you have to work fast because it dries almost instantly.  I just used my finger and smoothed it over the raised areas where I had sanded.

This was EXACTLY what these urns needed!  Love they way they turned out.

I added some moss and a robins egg blue egg to a couple of them.  NOW, what else can I use this Rub n Buff on?!?!?  It’s rather addictive!

Spring nesting

This is my favorite new display in the store!  And I keep finding more and more fun containers to make nests in!

If you want to assemble some of your own, we’ve got the little nests for sale.  But I love how it looks to have these jars filled with them too!

Save your empty jars and make some of your own!  I made mine in ‘purchased’ little apothecary jars that came with lids, but a lid isn’t really necessary.  Just tie a strip of homespun around the collar of your jar to cover it up!

I’ve got these little bags of nest grass and an egg ($2.95); just open it up and put it in your jar and you’ve made your own!  Also have ‘just eggs’ available individually.  And will be putting together some bags of just nest grass and a couple of feathers.

And I do believe that THIS is my favorite nest ‘assemblage’ that I’ve made for the store.  (I’m working on a couple more similar to this using PINK and AQUA paper shred for the nest!)

A little woven basket makes a cozy nest!

And we’ve got the ‘egg image cards’ available to buy if you want to frame up some of your own.

A lot of these ‘nesty things’ fit in really well with the beachy blue color that Sophie loves.  The neutral colors will really go well with ANYTHING.  And it’s a decorating ‘theme’ that could be left out year round.
