Time for Valentine Decor . . .

Yes, it’s still a little early to decorate for Valentine’s Day, but I hate that ’empty decor feeling’ between Christmas and Valentine’s Day.  So I stock my Valentine goods in my booth right after I take down all the Christmas.

p1370973
Here’s a peek of what I’ve added to my booths at Stars so far.

I haven’t done PINK for some years, and admittedly I went a little overboard on the pink.  Pink felt hearts.  Little pink chairs.  Pink LOVE banners.  Pink mini mannequin.  Pink Love potion bottles . . .

These aqua hearts were hand made using a vintage chenille bedspread.

Tea stained muslin cudid dolls with vintage sheet music wings.

Rustic wood hinged hearts and shutters.  Grubby ‘nekkid’ dolls.

Hand stitched red felt hearts with muslin ‘words of love’.

Lots of ‘smalls’; heart ornaments and Valentine cards made using vintage images.

White furniture binge

Went on a bit of a white furniture painting binge recently.  Here’s the end result of said binge.

Cute little metal birdcage.  Just a quick coat of white spray paint.

Little brown step stool.  Painted white and distressed.  Still debating whether or not I should stencil something on it???

Not a very good picture of the refinished piece on this one.  (sorry!)  Just a basic white paint job and distressed.

Cute three tier wall shelf; again just painted white and distressed.

This half round table was the same dark wood color as the shelf above.

This little shelf was already white.  I just distressed it.

This coffee table with lower shelf had already been repainted white, but they didn’t do a very good job of it.  You can’t really tell how ‘streaky’ the paint was in the pictures.  I needed to sand it before repainting it anyhow; and decided that I liked how it looked without repainting!  Distressing covers a multitude of mistakes!

Little ‘jewelry box size’ chest.  Removed the knobs, sanded off the red, white and blue; painted it white, distressed it and put the repainted knobs back on.  easy peasey.

Little upcycled side table made using a tall metal candle stand and an inverted metal tray.  Glued together using e6000, and spray painted.

This ‘open back’ cubby shelf was a medium wood color.  The white paint and distressing really emphasized the dental moulding at the top.  Below it, in the second photo is another cubby shelf, but with a back.  It was already white, so I just distressed it a bit.

I guess this shelf was for some kind of sports memorabilia.  Some white paint and you have just a regular white wall shelf!

No before picture for this one.  It was dark brown and had a ‘tapestry-like’ cover on the seat.  I LOVE the foot stools that open up like this for storage space!  Painted it white and distressed it a little.  Added some additional padding to the seat before I recovered it with a pretty soft aqua paisley print fabric.

All of these went to my booth at Stars.  A few have already sold.

So, what’s next???  I’ve got some pretty BIG news!  A new shop is opening soon in Aurora . . . and they will be carrying some of my items!  Stay tuned for more details and official Grand Opening notice!

Outdated / updated Folk Art chest

Cute little ‘folk art’ style three drawer chest.  Emphasis on the LITTLE!  It’s more like jewelry box size, but with deeper drawers.

P1270270

The images on the drawers are glued on PAPER; and the knobs are STAPLES on!  So, that’s a new ‘issue’ for me to deal with.  I can’t sand off all of the paper without removing the knobs, and those suckers would not BUDGE!  I finally just had to WHACK them off with a rubber mallet; then lift the staples with a screwdriver, then pull then the rest of the way out with pliers.  Whew!

P1270360

And this is what the drawer fronts looked like after I sanded off the paper pictures.  I could fill the holes from the staples and drill new holes for the new knobs . . . . OR . . . .    before I did all that I noticed that the BACKS of the drawers were the SAME size as the fronts.  Could the solution to this conundrum possibly be as simple as turning the drawers around?!?!?  NOTHING is ever that easy for me.

But YES!!  It worked!  The innards of the drawers were ‘clean’ but they LOOKED dirty due to a poor staining job; so I added some pretty paper on the bottoms to spiff them up a bit.  Now to search for ‘just the right’ new knobs; which entails digging through 8 plastic show boxes of knobs.

P1270365

Doesn’t it look like a face close up like this!?!  hehe  The knobs don’t exactly match; but are similar enough.   The top two have pewter colored centers and are new reproductions.  The bottom is a vintage knob and back plate with a gold finish.

I painted the whole thing aqua (including the BACK!)  and distressed with my orbital sander.  Pretty quick and easy projects once I got the old knobs off!

OUTDATED                                      UPDATED

P1270369

Another little ‘cook book’ shelf

P1220094I like this one much better than the first one I did a while back.  That one only had one drawer and a niche.  I painted this one aqua and distressed the edges, and decided to leave it ‘unadorned’.

P1190336

This is the other one I did a while ago.  Not sure if it’s because of the French wording on it, or the white paint, but it has not sold yet.  Might have to bring it home and repaint it aqua!  We’ll see how quickly the new aqua one sells.

P1220043Not too bad ‘as found’, but I don’t like knotty pine.

P1220047

And it was a bit worn along the edges.

P1220044Clean drawer innards? Check.

P1220046

It has little holes drilled in the back for mounting it on the wall.  I decided to leave those instead of fill them.  But you could easily fill them with putty, sand and paint over them if you wanted to.

P1220097I didn’t have any other knobs that looked better than the original ones, so I cleaned them up (were a bit greasy from being in a kitchen) and put them back on after painting and sanding.

P1220095

Maybe I should have painted the knobs to match??

P1220096Some vintage dictionary paper in the drawers, just because, and it’s ready to go to my booth at Stars.

Aqua painting binge

P1210946

My first ‘binge painting’ in my new place is done, and everything is now stocked in my booth at Stars.

P1210832

The three shelf spice rack.  I debated painting a design on the back, but nothing really ‘clicked’, so I painted it the same aqua as the shelf.  Lightly hand sanded along the edges to distress.

P1210781A reminder of how it looked originally.

P1210809In progress.  This is what it looked like after the first coat of paint.  You really don’t need ‘perfect’ coverage on the first coat.  As you can see, I removed the backing; originally because I was going to paint a design on it.  But even if I had initially planned to just paint it to match the rest of the shelf, I’d have removed it to make painting easier.

P1210810With the back removed you have far LESS little corners to paint and you can reach the shelved from the front and back.  And the backing takes about 15 seconds to paint with a roller.  SO, even accounting for the time involved in removing and replacing the backing; you have saved time overall.

P1210818The frame.

P1210811

First I spray painted it flat black, then two coats of aqua brushed on.

P1210819I intentionally avoided getting the aqua paint down into all the carved details for some contrast.  Once dry, I hand sanded along the raised edges.

P1210817The little 3 drawer jewelry chest.  I gave it different knobs . . . thought about painting the knobs to match, but decided not to.  If it doesn’t sell like this I can always bring it home and paint them.  I used a turquoise spray paint on this one.

P1210764The before.

P1210815The ‘to paint or not to paint’ conundrum strikes again!  It was just TOO plain with nothing on the front.  These resin medallions were all I could find that would fit with the non-removable knobs.  Added them as an after thought . . .paint them?

P1210839After walking away from it and coming back later, I decided it was too much contrast o leave them ‘as is’.  Opted to dry brush paint them to allow some of the black show through.

P1210840

Just what it needed!P1210853

The inside is fully painted too . . . .

P1210766

Because it HAD to be!  If the inside had been white or any other complimentary color, I could have left it.  I actually PREFER the inside a different color . . . just not when it means MORE work for me.  (especially on such a small piece!)

P1210845This one ‘needs something’  . . . . but I failed to find that something.  We’ll see if it sells ‘as is’ and if not I’ll re-address the embellishment conundrum.

P1210911The top had a few flaws that were still visible after painting, so I stenciled a fleur design in a darker turquoise . . . and hated how it looked!  The contrast was TOO much.  Grabbed my paint roller and started painting over it and  . . . . . OH WAIT!!  It looks better partially painted over . . . kind of a faded look.  Old

P1210912Old dictionary pages glued to the bottom of the muddy brown drawers.

P1210828The before.  The designs on the front were ‘papered on’, but sanded of pretty easily.  The KNOBS were not removable unfortunately.  Had they been, I would have filled the holes and added new ones, centered on the drawers.

P1210844The doll clothes wardrobe;  just painted it, no embellishments.

P1210824Even though it was unfinished wood, it still required some ‘prep work’ before painting.  Raw wood will really absorb dirt and oils from usage, so if it looks dirty or grimey; give it a good sanding before you paint.  As with the spice rack, I painted the backing separately BEFORE attaching it.

P1210847The Cafe do Paris tray was a half-finished project from another time.  It had been base coated black, so all I had to do was paint it and stencil the design on.  The black ‘edging’ was done with the paint leftover on my stenciling sponge.

P1210836Not entirely sold on the color I used for the upcycled candle holder finial.  It’s one of those little free samples that Lowes has coupons for every so often.  It’s almost a periwinkle . . . we’ll see if it sells, if not I can always repaint it!

P1210790A quick rummaging through my stash of decorative curtain rod ends produced this piece which worked perfectly as a ‘topper’.

P1210791I just glued it on with tacky glue.  The candle well was deep enough that I didn’t need to remove the screw.

P1210989I typically try to put the ‘new stock’ at the front on my booth when I restock.  Reason being, most shoppers just ‘glance as they walk by’ as they walk up and down the aisles in the antique mall . . . until something ‘catches their eye’ and draws them in for a closer look.   And for those who come in on a regular basis, you want them to see NEW things every time they visit.

P1210991I’ve still got some white and cream color furniture pieces.  Some of those are grouped together down the back side of my booth.

P1210990I tired to ‘gradually’ phase into the new aqua pieces as you move around to the front of the booth.

P1210951Little gold grouping inside the doll wardrobe.

P1210958The little 3 drawer piece fit nicely tucked under a small table; the top piece in a stack of three.

P1210957I LOVE this little white shelf with a drawer!  I have not idea what it is.  My best guess is that it was used in the kitchen for cook books and the drawer for recipe cards.  It’s been in my booth for quite a while.  Might be time to bring it home and paint it aqua.

P1210962Layers!  I always display in layers!  So if the Cafe de Paris sign and little  cupboard with doors sells; there is more product behind it so it I don;t have too much bare space.

P1210988More layers.
P1210960Come on by and check out  the new stuff!

Wood and wire CD holder? Outdated – Updated.

At least that is what I am GUESSING this thing was originally created as!

P1190825The wire shelves are about the size that would hold CD’s, so I can’t imagine what else it’s intended use might be???

P1190826And it’s actually NOT a bad color to begin with.  A sage green with very lightly  dry brushed white to make it look distressed.

P1190827My first thought was to just add more dry brushed white to enhance the distressed look.  THAT was an epic FAIL of an idea!  It looked awful!  Too awful to even take photos of!  Because of the wire shelves, my only other option for painting it was spray paint.

P1200009I decided on white spray paint.   LOVE how it looks painted white.  So much so that I was tempted to KEEP it for myself.  Decided that I ‘better NOT’ keep it though, as I have been ‘stashing stuff away’ for my upcoming move for over a year now; and I have a feeling I have a lot MORE stuff that I realized.  Unpacking in my new place is going to be like Christmas!

P1200006

Kitty Spike oversees the photo shoot.

P1200068
The shelf was a perfect display piece for some of my vintage white creamers and sugar bowls in my booth at Stars.  As I had expected, it didn’t last long and has already sold!

If I ever come across another similar piece, I will most definitely grab it!

Wood cubby shelf :: Outdated – UPdated

P1190588

Just your every day old wood cubby shelf . . .with stickers on it of course!  GRrrr!!  I hate scraping stickers off!

P1190658I had Michael cut a backing for me.  I ALWAYS paint the backing before attaching it.  Much easier to paint both parts that way.  Painted a soft putty white then distressed just a tad.

P1190659Close up of distressing; primarily along the edges.

P1190666It has gone to my booth st Stars.

Bringing out the details: Cottage chic update for vintage pedestal table

P1190959I think this is probably my very favorite style of lamp tables.

P1190960

Mostly because of the pretty turned pedestals and elegant feet.

P1190958This recent find was still very sturdy, but extremely ‘well worn’.

P1190963Even the lower tier was in quite bad shape.

P1190962Be still my heart!!!  Look at those lovely, delicate carved details along the edges!!

P1190961Such a shame that they are barely noticeable in it’s ‘all brown’ state.

P1200308Nearly all of the old varnish was already worn off, so it just needed a wee bit of sanding before I painted it white.  After three coats of paint, it was time to bring out those pretty details.

P1200311I hand sanded along the high points on the feet and the turnings on the pedestal.

P1200310Brought out the turned details on the center part of the pedestal.

P1200312And those delicately carved details along the rims of both tiers.

P1200309Because I wanted those details around the rims to really stand out, I opted to not do any distressing on the flat table top surfaces.

P1200324I took her to Stars last week so I could ‘rebuild’ that all white vignette at the front on my booth.

P1200325This one of a kind beauty can be yours for $99.00.

Companion piece to the Paris chic cupboard

WHILE I was working on the cupboard in yesterday’s post (which sold before I even got it into my booth today!) I used the same stencil to make a ‘companion’ table.

10.1.13 pics 066

This is what it looked like before it’s most recent make over.  AND I have two more matching tables!  Hopefully the third time IS the charm on these tables because I am really close to being “over them”!  (ie SICk of repainting them!)

Here’s the original make-over story.

Those went unsold for too long so I took them home and did the postmark stencil on all three.  Which I REALLY liked and was just SURE the shoppers would too!  Notsomuch!  So, here’s my ‘last ditch effort’ to make these little tables into something ‘sale-able’!

10.7.13 stars etsy projects 066

I absolutely LOVE this French hand writing!!!!  The place I bought the stencil from showed a dresser with the drawer fronts stenciled.  Gorgeous.  (Now I gotta find a dresser!!)

10.7.13 stars etsy projects 072

Michael thinks the ‘sticking point’ on why none of the previous versions of these tables has sold is the legs.  The rusty old crusty legs.  I LOVE the old legs.  The old legs are WHY I bought the stools in the first place.  I’d just hate to paint over all that natural rust and wear!

10.7.13 stars etsy projects 071

SO, we shall see if this make-over generates a sale?!?!?  I brought home the other two tables to also re-do.  Should I do them the same???  I wonder how the wording would look done with a bit of a diagonal slant on the table top???

10.7.13 stars etsy projects 070

For now, this one that is already done is at Curiosities; $32.00.

Little rummage sale wall cabinet

7.13.13 Both + finds 202Cute little green cabinet I snagged at a rummage sale earlier this year.

7.13.13 Both + finds 203Completely finished INSIDES too!  Bonus!!

P1080055This was really ‘one of those things’ that I really could have easily used ‘as is’.  And after I almost didn’t re- paint it after I sanded off the sheen.  But I’ve never have been very good at leaving well enough alone!  So it got painted aqua (inside and out!) and sanded again.

P1080056LOVE how nicely it distressed along the Wainscot grooves!

P1080058Distressed the back side of the door, but not the shelves.  (orbital sander won’t fit inside the shelves!)

P1080059It would make a perfect little wall cabinet for a bathroom.  It already has two heavy duty wall hooks on the back for hanging.

P1080071It is available in my booth at Stars for $35.00.
