Altered jars

P1070393Finished another batch of altered jars.

Two layers of scrapbook paper and a vintage prescription label (bought on etsy) on this one.

P1070396Sheer ribbon and a vintage key around the top.

Very vintage looking.

P1070398Two layers of papers and a ‘flat key’ embellishment.  I found these flat keys at the craft store in the scrapbook section.  I think it was a package of 8 assorted sizes and styles.  PERFECT for projects like this as they are flat on the back and easy to glue to a flat surface, but still ‘raised’ enough to look fairly realistic.

P1070397And some ribbon around the neck.

P1070400A little chipboard bird-cage on the label of this one.  A tiny repro skeleton key around the neck.

P1070399Added a vintage white ceramic knob to the lid of this one. (glued on with e6000)

P1070402These have all available for purchase in my booth at Stars.

Recent on-line finds

12.29.12 stars Val buys 086I posted some stuff I bought from Save on Crafts   after finding the link on Pinterest a while back.  And I just ‘treated myself’ to a few more things.  Supply stuff that I will use to make things to sell, but I still consider it a ‘treat’ for myself given that I am in serious ‘get rid of stuff’ mode.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 087How cute are these ceramic birds?!?!  They came as a set of three.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 088They will be getting crowns, of course.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 089And maybe a little ‘key necklace’ , like I did on this bird:

12.29.12 stars Val buys 134The new blue birds are about twice as big as that white one though.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 093I can’t resist KEYS!  These repro skeleton keys came on the ring shown, but it easily opens to remove the keys for individual use.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 096I’ve seen this crazy COOL printed crinkly paper wire edged ribbon around for quite a while now; at crazy high prices.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 095

Even from Save On Crafts (which is cheaper than retail but not quite as cheap as wholesale, BUT does not have ‘minimums’ like most wholesale does) it was a tad pricey.  I will be using it VERY sparingly!

12.29.12 stars Val buys 097Moss covered wire!  Pretty cook, eh?!?!?  Will probably use this to add to birds’ nests.  Perhaps as a HANDLE to the nest can be hung?  Maybe even just to make some moss wire balls to toss in with some moss rocks.

Got another spool of the burlap ribbon, in a wider size this time.  As you can see, this stuff is NOT ‘real’ burlap ribbon, but a synthetic.  I like the little bit of sparkle it has.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 098

Figure I can use this on things where real burlap just won’t work.  but I DO have lots of real burlap ribbon too, which I love working with as well.  Might try to stamp some designs on this stuff to sort of replicate that paper ribbon.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 101Some pretty pale green JUTE twine.   Not sure how I will use this, but I’m sure I’ll think of something.  I’ve done quite a few ‘jute wrapped’ jars and vases in the past, maybe I try one with this green jute!

12.29.12 stars Val buys 103And this satin ribbon is my big BOO-BOO!  It looked more AQUA on the website, hence I bought a lot of it.  Alas, it’s very GREEN.  I’m sure I can use SOME of it, but I really don’t need FIVE spools of it.  Selling the 4 extras via my etsy shop.

It’s strange, because I could tell the jute was green when I ordered it, but the ribbon looked more like the same color as this other ribbon I bought the last time.  In THEIR defense, it was called MINT GREEN ribbon.  Just one of those colors that seems to have lost of different interpretations.  Live and learn!

12.29.12 stars Val buys 105This is a set of vintage style bird post cards, in a cool tin box.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 106

Will frame these to sell at Stars and in my etsy shop.

12.29.12 stars Val buys 107A pretty good deal for the price; two of each style of postcard.

Embellishing. Merchandising.

A thrift store jar is a jar.  Add a few little embellishments and it becomes a treasure!

And it doesn’t have to be anything grand or fancy.   Simple can be better because the simpler the look, the more flexible it is to fitting in with ANY decorating style your customers may love.

I think I may be ADDICTED to buying old crochet thread spools like this.  I just cannot resist them if they are white/cream/tan colors!  I fill jars with them.  Make bundles of them for those shoppers who HAVE their own jar already and just want to fill it.  I decided I also like placing single spools here and there, and have seen lots of other decorators do so.  SO, I decided to add a little embellishing to my single spools!

Again, nothing fancy!  Just dug through my box of tea stained paper scraps and wrapped a piece around each spool.  Tied a vintage key and a hand stamped tag on one; and glued buttons to the paper of the other, lace above and below; then a tiny repro skeleton key.

Sweet and simple.

And now for sale in my booth at Stars!
